Vietnam calls for intensified dialogue for solution to Cyprus issue

09:27' 11/06/2008 (GMT+7)

VietNamNet Bridge – Vietnam calls on all related sides in the dispute in Cyprus to increase dialogue and confidence-building measures in order to reach a long-term and comprehensive solution to the situation in Cyprus.

Speaking at the UN Security Council session on Cyprus on June 9, Deputy Permanent Representative to the UNSC Ambassador Bui The Giang said: “Sharing the Secretary-General’s view that the coming period will not be easy and may require sincere understanding, flexibility and major compromises, we call upon both sides to bring into full play the present momentum to foster an environment conducive to moving the process forward, particularly through encouraging confidence-building measures.”

He said Vietnam firmly believed that intensified dialogues, especially the readiness recently shown by leaders of the two communities to meet as and when needed prior to the commencement of their formal negotiations, would open a window of opportunity for Cypriots to finally resolve the prolonged dispute on the Mediterranean island.”

The Vietnamese diplomat appreciated the high sense of political commitments by leaders of both the Greek Cypriots and the Turkish Cypriots at a series of meetings, most notably the one on March 21st 2008, to the implementation of a broad outline of a solution, based on a bizonal, bicommunal federation with political equality, taking into account the legitimate interests of all people in Cyprus, as defined by relevant Security Council resolutions.

Giang spoke highly of the positive signs that representatives of both sides, through working groups and technical committees, have brought into discussions a wide range of important issues, from governance, power-sharing, European Union-related matters, security and guarantees, territory to economic and commercial questions, cultural heritage, crisis management, environment and humanitarian issues.

The ambassador also commended the tremendous efforts undertaken by the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) leaders and staff, as well as its vital role in cultivating full-fledged negotiations aimed at reunifying the island and supported the Secretary-General’s proposal to extend UNFICYP’s mandate for another six months.

“Having in mind firm understanding that the question of Cyprus should in the final analysis determined by Cypriots themselves, we sincerely hope that the planned meeting between leaders of the Greek and Turkish Cypriots in the second half of June will produce positive outcomes towards this end,” he stressed.
